The drypoint in question comes from the collection "Croquis du front italien" (Sketches from the Italian Front), published in Paris by the publisher D'Alignan in 1917. This collection consists of fifty drypoints, although the official titles are 48, with an additional nine plates including chapter headings and endings. The portfolios were printed in a limited edition: 100 copies on Dutch paper and 25 on Japanese paper.
The work is organized into four albums, each introduced by a preface titled "La Retrovia," written by the author in both Italian and French. The engravings in the portfolios were created between 1915 and 1917, following a graphic approach inspired by French style. The project is conceived as an organic whole, without compromising the autonomy of the individual sheets, which still present themselves as part of a cohesive sequence.
Some sheets bear a date, others include handwritten comments by the author, while others have no captions or inscriptions. The ones presented here are all signed and dated in pencil by the author.
