Tiger Tateishi
(Tagawa, 1941 – 1998)
Tiger Tateishi (1941-1998) was a Japanese artist known for his surreal and visionary style, blending science fiction, comics, and pop culture. Born in Fukuoka, he began his career as an illustrator and painter, developing a unique aesthetic influenced by both traditional Japanese art and Western avant-garde movements.
In the 1970s, he moved to Italy, where he collaborated with the renowned designer Ettore Sottsass, contributing to the visual research of the Memphis movement and innovations in postmodern design. His work ranged from painting to graphic design and the creation of art objects, always driven by a strong experimental spirit.
Returning to Japan in the 1980s, he continued to explore new expressive languages until his passing in 1998. His work remains a reference point in contemporary Japanese art, admired for its originality and dreamlike imagery.
